blond, blonde
These two forms retain a trace of the grammatical gender they have in French, since blonde is normally used (as a noun and an adjective) of a woman. With blond, however, the distinction is less clear-cut: a blond, or a blond person, can be a woman or a man, and blond hair can belong to either sex. Examples (BrE unless otherwise specified):

• Crews of tall, blond men who hardly ever spoke —T. Findley, CanE 1984

• His blond eye-lashes gave him a bemused look —Penelope Fitzgerald, 1988

• Her blonde plaits reaching half-way down her bony back —Colin Dexter, 1989

• The little girls whispered to each other, their blond heads shining in the rather dark room —New Yorker, AmE 1990

• Lugging that doll of hers, a thing with blonde shiny hair —A. Duff, NewZE 1990.
